I think Hog is pretty close to hitting the nail on the head. As the price of crude oil goes up, alternatives will become more and more cost effective. The technology already exists for everything from wind turbines and solar energy to hydrogen and nuclear (in very limited use, of course).

But I don't think the issue is so much as "will there be oil alternatives?" so much as it is "will we have those alternatives in place WHEN our oil supply runs low and/or is cutoff?" which it inevitably will be if we continue to look to the Middle East for our energy. I have a little more hope for places like the EU and Asia, where people aren't nearly as dependent on an infrastructure of gas-guzzling vehicles as a means of conducting their everyday lives. These are the same countries/regions that are setting up windfarms to lessen their dependence upon oil as a source of electric power.

Compare that to America, under the neo-fascist Bush-Cheney regime which seems to believe that the slick, black stuff literally replentishes itself faster than we can suck it up out of the ground. Needless to say, things could get quite interesting over the next few years. Especially if these fools manage to fumble, fright or fuck-up their way back into office.

Gotta love the pessimistic view.

I posted on this like 3 months ago. But it was one of those "paranoia-inducing" posts, so naturally, it went mostly ignored.

Here's another take:

ASPO: Great oil party is coming to an end

Soaring oil prices have stirred long-standing debate among experts about how much crude remains in ground.

By Amelie Herenstein - PARIS

Soaring oil prices have stirred a long-standing debate among experts about how much crude remains in the ground and how to manage the countdown to when the reserves run dry.

"We have all been enjoying the greatest party the world has ever seen: the great oil party," said Kjell Aleklett, president of the Association for the Study of Peak Oil, an informal network of scientists and oil experts which aims to make "the world aware that the party is over".

"Few of us have realized that it was a party, still less that it is now reaching its climax as the champagne corks pop on all sides," Aleklett said, making an analogy between oil and champagne.

"After the climax comes the decline when we have to sober up and face the fact that the party is coming to an end," he said.

The association maintains that the peak after which oil production begins to decline is much closer than is commonly thought, standing somewhere between 2008 and 2010 for oil and 2013 for gas.

These crucial dates, which would mark the beginning of an era of high energy prices, are particularly difficult to establish because of the quality and availability of the figures they are based on.

The definitions used also complicate the task of calculating when the oil supply will begin shrinking because of ambiguity over the definitions used by experts. For example, there is a difficulty in determining the difference between reserves, of which there are three kinds, and resources, which are considered less certain.

Moreover, reserves change. Their levels have been steadily increasing over the past decades as new technologies are used to prospect, evaluate and recover crude.

Estimates for the peak of oil production vary widely in the industry from as soon as 2004 to as late as 2048, but the median date of 2020, based on the proven reserves of about 1.050 trillion barrels, is cited the most often.

That would mean that production would remain robust until 2050, meeting half of energy demand. Under that hypothesis, oil would still be produced until the end of this century.

However, ASPO doubts the figures provided by producer countries and estimates proven reserves to stand at 878 billion barrels.

Given the huge stakes involved, ASPO accuses governments and oil companies of withholding the truth because of unspoken political and economic motives.

On the other hand, oil industry insiders suggest that ASPO members, who are often retired oil company employees and academics, use outdated technical and statistical methods.

Regardless the level of global oil reserves, the problem of their decline is real. That problem is exacerbated by the concentration of reserves in the politically volatile Middle East and steady growth in demand.

The International Energy Agency estimates that the energy market could grow by two thirds by 2030 and has called for massive investments to meet the challenge.

The recent climb of oil prices above 40 dollars a barrel has so far not sparked much debate about how oil is consumed, although policymakers are worried about the economic impact of high oil prices.

French MP for the Green Party Yves Cochet said in a recent newspaper opinion piece that "the imminent end of cheap oil is the most dire test that humanity has confronted" and the social consequences would be "devastating".

This is an interesting breaking story about the Carlyle Group's move to takeover our minds(aka the 3rd largest movie theater chain in the global motion picture exhibition industry, with over 200 theaters and 2,200 screens worldwide).

Onex To Sell Loews Cineplex To Investor Group For C$2.0 Billion; Bain Capital, Carlyle And Spectrum Equity To Purchase Loews

Toronto -- Onex Corporation (TSX:OCX) announced today that it and Oaktree Capital Management, LLC, its partner in Loews Cineplex Entertainment Corporation and Grupo Cinemex ("Loews"), have reached an agreement to sell the business to a corporation formed by Bain Capital, The Carlyle Group and Spectrum Equity Investors for C$2.0 billion. Onex and Oaktree will retain the Loews interest in Cineplex Galaxy, which operates the Loews theatre business in Canada as well as Galaxy Entertainment and trades on the Toronto Stock Exchange under the symbol CGX.UN.

Loews is . The assets being acquired include Loews' operations in the U.S., Grupo Cinemex, and its 50% interests in Megabox Cineplex of Korea and Yelmo Cineplex of Spain. Onex' share of the cash proceeds is expected to be approximately C$775 million. In addition, Onex will continue to own units of Cineplex Galaxy, which have a current market value of approximately C$105 million.

"Loews Cineplex has been an excellent investment for Onex Corporation," said Anthony Munk, a Managing Director of Onex. "In partnership with management, we successfully restructured the company when we acquired it out of bankruptcy. Since acquiring it we have built it into a leading exhibitor. As part of the transformation of Loews, we completed three successful acquisitions in the U.S., Mexico and Korea. We also merged Loews' Canadian assets with Galaxy Entertainment as part of an income trust public offering, which significantly enhanced the value of the business."

"We are pleased to partner with Carlyle and Spectrum to acquire one of the largest movie theater chains in the world, with a high quality circuit focused in the top 10 U.S. markets and key international locations," said John Connaughton, a Managing Director at Bain Capital. "Thanks in part to an existing theater portfolio that has been recently upgraded, Loews is well-positioned to capitalize on the industry's steady growth prospects. The investor group will work closely with the talented management team to grow the business."

Credit Suisse First Boston LLC and Citigroup Global Markets acted as financial advisors to Loews Cineplex in connection with this transaction. It is currently expected that the sale, which is subject to customary regulatory approvals, will close during the third quarter.

Oaktree Capital Management, LLC, based in Los Angeles, is a private investment management firm with approximately US$29 billion of assets committed for management primarily from institutional investors.

I read that too, Hog. Grigg seems to be the classic conservative type who refuses to buy into the imperialist neo-conservative tripe that led us into Iraq in the first place. If he is giving this movie the nod, then Moore has definitely struck a chord with A LOT of people on the right of the political spectrum as well.

It's not hard to see how F911 is Karl Rove's worst possible PR nightmare come true. It's still only June, and now the entire country will (finally) be watching these guys with a much-needed healthy dose of cynicism, and the Bush administration has plenty of time yet to screw up even more.

Just wait until Bush's "coronation" takes place at the Republican National Convention on the eve of 9/11 this year -- in New York City, of all places. Bush's dancing on the WTC dead already promises a demonstration turnout that will make the DNC/Chicago '68 riots look like a playground scuffle.
